I
The hide
Every piece begins with a single hide, tanned the slow way with tree bark and water over weeks rather than hours. It is the old method, and the patient one. It yields a closed, living grain that deepens and softens with wear instead of cracking or thinning. Our hides come from tanneries in Italy, England and Spain, among them two of the oldest names in the craft, and we keep only the part of each hide that will last a lifetime.

The hand
From there the work is human. The leather is cut, its edges bevelled, inked and burnished by hand until they are smooth to the touch. The stitches are set by eye. The hardware is solid, chosen to outlast fashion and to be repaired rather than discarded. Nothing is hurried, because a thing made in a hurry will tell on you for years.

The years
A James Aston piece is not finished on the day it is made. It is finished by you, slowly, as it learns the shape of how you live. The leather darkens. The grain comes into its character. What you carry after ten years is not the thing you bought, but a better one. This is the whole of our promise, and the reason we make few things, and make them once.
